Some might say that Heisler Park is the “crown jewel” of Laguna Beach, and I would not disagree with them. This lovely park seemingly has it all - public art, sweeping views of the sea, a colorful array of blooms, and lots of pathways and seating from which to enjoy this feast for the eyes. This painting pays homage to that “royal” status with bold use of the color purple, which has historic connections to royalty.

Interestingly, the ancient purple dye that was held in such esteem also has a connection to the sea. As early as the 15th century BC, the citizens of Sidon and Tyre, two cities on the coast of present day Lebanon, produced purple dye from a sea snail called the spiny dye-murex. This rich purple dye that was produced through a long and difficult process became known as Tyrian purple. Both Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid mention clothing colored with this dye.
