The Crow's Nest

$300.00

About a mile south of downtown Laguna Beach, a fairytale scene awaits those who seek it, tucked into the cliffs off of Victoria Beach. Built as a staircase to the beach in 1926, this lovely tower structure is known as “La Tour,” or more colloquially as the “Pirate Tower.”

State Senator William Edward Brown built the home (including the tower) for his family as a summer and holiday retreat from their primary residence in Beverly Hills. Its second owner was Harold Kendrick, a retired Naval captain from Los Angeles, who was intrigued with pirate lore. Kendrick was known to dress as a pirate and hide candy and coins within the rocks of the structure for local children to hunt. More recent previous ownership has included the likes of Bette Midler, and the home continues to be maintained as a private residence.

The tower is closed to the public, but the beach on which it sits is open to visit (at least at low tide – if you go at high tide you may not reach the tower at all).
